Quick question: Medifast Diet...How does it work ? Hoping for any response. 2nd question I got is.. I am 5'6" and currently weight 201.5 pounds. I went to the doctor last week for a routine physical and they calculated my BMI at 41 (by holding some sort of electronic tool out that looks like a video game controller). Medifast (and other BMI tools) calculate my BMI currently at 32.6. I can't understand this disparity. |

I'm stumped. I'm not so sure what is the answer to that question. I'll do some research and get back to you if I find an good answer. You should email the people at Medifast as they probably could give you help..

Not to argue with your doctor, but MF's bmi calculator is correct. BMI is a number based on height & weight, not electrical impedance...

BMI is based solely on your height:weight ratio to get a body fat percentage that would be "average" for a person of your height and weight. It's not accurate at all..
It sounds like you had a bioelectrical impedance test. It measures body fat percentage. The tool you held was measuring the length of time it took an electrical signal to travel from one hand to the other. The slower the signal the higher the percentage of fat. There are machines that you can stand on that measure the signal foot to foot.. ETA: This is the test that they have used to diagnose some with normal weight obesity.... People that fall into the "normal" BMI/weight range, but in fact have an excess of fat. Think thin person with underarm wings when they wave. LOL.. |

That is your %Body Fat I believe. Your BMI is 32, and your Percent Body Fat is 41%. So take your total weight, 201, and as a percentage you have 82 pounds of fat and the rest is Lean Body Mass (everything other than fat)...

Yes the "tool" your doctor used is to measure % body fat not BMI....they are two different animals...

Also consider that BMI doesn't take into account how much of your weight is fat vs how much is muscle. Bodybuilders with almost no body fat usually have high BMI numbers, because muscle weighs more than fat...

Meaning muscle is denser than fat, of course. Pound for pound they weight the same...
