Got a question, hope someone can answer... Short (3 day?) Cleanse/Detox quick Nutrisystem diet that is not fruit-based? Looking forward for any comment. My other question... BMI is now at 39.8, which means I am no longer morbidly obese, just obese... |
That's a good question. I'm not sure what is the answer to that question. I'll do some poking around and get back to you if I find an anything. You should email the people at Nutrisystem as they probably could give you an answer..

Congrats! I recall the day I left morbidly as well. Now I'm almost to being just 1/2 obese in a few weeks. Then it's onto being over weight..
Keep up the great work... |
Great job, I still have around 5 points before morbid is history...
Good job my friend. Keep up the hard work and the results will continue!..

It's so funny - we all can't wait to be overweight - woo hoo!!!!..

So if I do the math correct I should be in the normal range when I hit about 165 lbs, the odd part for me is knowing that when I trained and ran marathons (1999-2001) and wore a 32 size pants I was still in the over-weight category. At 5'10" I should be in the 175-177 range, yet I never fell below 182 even when I averaged 50-55 miles per week of training.....I guess this is basic guideline, and if you want exact numbers you would need to see a Doctor?..
Thanks for the chart! From it, I found I am no longer Morbidly Obese! At 36.8 BMI, I still have a few points to get to overweight but I'm looking forward to it...

Magcdn, if you are quite muscular, your BMI will be higher but you are not necessarily overweight. I read once that "Ahnold", when he was in his prime, would have been classified as "obese" based on BMI, so it does not hold true for everyone. I know when I was running marathons my legs, especially, were quite muscular and probably added a few pounds to my healthy weight..

Also there are differences in bone mass between people and contrary to that forumla most fitness experts I know agree that men & women should not have the same body weight (generally men should have more muscle and weight more) or body fat (generally women should have more) at the same height..
If you start to feel you are looking good and feeling good and you are "only overweight" you can get a fitness assessment and find out where you really stand. One of the biggest things to look at there is your % body fat but if you decide go act like a professional athlete we can do things water displacement tests and bone density scans as well to get your exact body mass, volume, body fat vs muscle mass, oxegen capacity, etc. In other words there is a lot more to health and fitness than a ratio of height to weight.. Edit: That BMI ratio does however do a great job at telling us we are WAY overweight and need to do something about it... it's just not good at figuring out those last few pounds..... |

Tuvya is right, BMI is a guide, not a set rule. However, we know we are fat, don't have muscles like Arnold, so gives us a good idea of health risk factors. The government states that there is a difference between women and men, but no government guide has been put out. Look how long it took them to change the food pyramid..
Instead of using Arnold as an example (steroids) use professional athletes today, like fighters. Barring the heavyweights (>200), most of these guys are in top shape. cruisers reside from 175-200, light heavyweight is below 175. Examples are Roy Jones Jr., Anthony Tarver. These guys are in excellent shape, Jones is 5'11, walks around with 190 pounds. (think every sport but football follows these trends) Tired of the argument that somebody did steroids, possibly GH, and because the had muscle (and alot of water) the BMI was wrong.. Anyways, included the link to the CDC official website if people interested, but much has already been stated. Talks about the risk factors of having a high BMI also.. Http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/..._adult_BMI.htm.. |

I'm with you. It seems that every time BMI comes up, someone uses Ahnold as an example of why BMI doesn't work. How many of us are ever going to look anything like Ahnold? He doesn't even look like that Ahnold anymore. The BMI chart works for the vast majority of us since the vast majority of us are not body builders or athletes. If we were either, we probably wouldn't need to lose weight..
I do agree with the poster that said that BMI is a good guide but body fat percentage is what you should consider as you near your goal. I stopped about 6 lbs. short of reaching a BMI under 25 because I felt good where I was and thought that I looked just fine there. With my Omron tester I measure right around 20% body fat. I do plan to try to drop down to 174 by July 4th and I'll see where my BF% is then. I would ultimately like to get it around 15% but I think I would have to get around 168 for that to happen and it would put my BMI at 24.1... |
That's what I like about this board, there are so many smart folks to help me learn more about health. I do intend to get my body fat measured, but not till I am close to my goal, which is still 40 lbs away. Thanks...
Wow! I'm so excited! Based on the BMI chart, I too am OVERWEIGHT! I'm at 29.5!!!!..
Agreed. I will probably never be in the normal range per BMI. At 6'1", 207 lbs I am smack dab in the middle of "overweight" but my BF% came in at 14.1% on Friday...
How was it measured? To many different ways to measure. To bad we don't have a hydrostatic machine. I measure mine by Bio electrical Impedance, (can be 4% variance), surprised how it is about the same with the chart or calibers. Just an average Joe am I. (currently at 30%).
Anyways, I feel for the vast majority of people on a weight loss program, it is a good guide, At your height, Extreme Obesity would be 302 pounds, Do you think that is a good number? what about 302 with 14% BF? I still think that number is a little freakish. I enjoy your perspective because I know you work out alot, just look at the articles you post, and you comments when somebody falls off the wagon... |

I was getting worried about BMI based on a <25 would mean a 185 goal for me. My goal now is under 200, this puts my BMI at close to 25. The 185 mark may be a valid goal and I am going to assess it when I hit my current <200 mark. Age is an issue here...

My scale uses bio-electrical impedance. I understand the pitfalls of bio-electrical impedance but I try to keep as many variables as close to the same as possible. I use the same scale, take the reading at the same time of day (morning after emptying my bladder), scale is in the same location, step on the scale in the same fashion, etc. My water intake is pretty consistent day in and day out so my hydration level theoretically should fluctuate too much..
Relatively speaking, my BF% has gone from 27% to 14% (64 lbs to 29 lbs) which would indicate that I have gained 5 lbs of non-fat weight (hopefully muscle) along the way as well... |
I just got a new scale, similar to what you are describing, and have been tracking BF%. Starting to see some movement down on that too. Was >30% and now at 28%. Hydration is interesting as it does fluctuate and my water intake is pretty consistent. I am thinking that as my levels of exercise have increased and I am bumping up levels weekly, this is causing the hydration levels to vary. By vary, I don't mean a lot, more like in a range between 53% and 40%. Not too worried about it, just interesting to watch along with the weight...
That is awesome, as long as it is done consistently it shows you dropped your BF by 50%. I think that is the key when measuring BF, consistent measurement, any which way it is done. Can't go switching ways half way through and get the same results..
I need to get to 25% soon, because I want to redo my life insurance policy in July. Unfortunately they look at BMI charts by themselves, and don't think I can get there in time (lose 40 pounds 2 months) I can get half there (20 pounds) and to my original goal, put me right in the middle of comfortable overweight zone. By their charts that would take me from 34% to 28%. Man, depressed now that know I won't make it. Well, if not this year, then next... |
Just bought a new scale also, Homedics 520 health station, it rocks. On Friday I weighed with my old scale, and the weight flucuated eight pounds, 222 (which I thought was way to low), then 230 (too high), then 226, figure it was time to replace it. My only complaint is it makes my feet tingle after I get off it. Don't know if it is the ridges and my feet are sensitive or what. But like the fact it tells me hydration (50% because I have to much fat) BF%, muscle mass (was way too low I thought, and embarrassed to tell what it was) and bone mass. Unfortuantely who knows how accurate any of these readings are, but the scale definitely works, doesn't matter where it is located or anything...

I have just entered the "Overweight" category as it applies to BMI. I know it is just a word, and that I am not done, but for some odd reason this really hit me hard today. This stuff works great, you just have to work the plan, sounds so damn easy but it really does work.....Thanks for all the information you all have shared, you have been a big part of why I am just Overweight....Mike..

Magcdn,.
It's all a matter of perspective. Just being overweight sounds like a big improvement to me. Beats that ugly sounding word "obese" for sure. Congrats on your loss... |
I misread, I thought the thread was a roman numeral "BM6" and someone was going to announce that the BBGG's had them on the throne 6 times today...
I've been shooting for overweight ever sense I shed Morbid & Severe (I'm just obese now.
) I'm at 30.8 - 3 more pounds to overweight!.. |
Hi everyone! I wanted to change my height on Mypage to get an accurate BMI, since my height is 5'6" not 5'5" as I put down accidentally. I can't seem to find how to edit it anywhere! Thank you!..
Login to MyAccount then select general information. Your height is at the bottom of the page...
Thank you Tom! It was so easy and I spent so much time navigating my profile to find it. It did change my bmi by 1 pt. Thank you!..
Goodness. My target weight is 175, and that would make my BMI 26.6 - still overweight! That just doesn't seem right. If my body fat is under 20% at that point, I'm stopping. I'll just have to be overweight the rest of my days...
I think that body fat is a better indicator than BMI. I picked up an Omron Body Fat Analyzer. Not too expensive. It does a nice job at telling you your % Body Fat...
